containing enough matter to create 3 billion of our Suns. Previous observations had shown that the galaxy’s center were moving at very high speeds around an invisible object. Using the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers Holland Ford, Richard Harms, and their colleagues discovered near the galaxy’s center a disk of gas rotating at a speed and in a pattern that could be caused only by a very small, dense object that almost certainly was a black hole. Ford and Harms’s observations demonstrated that the jet was emanating from the center of this disk.
